Journalists urged to promote Zim as destination of choice

Journalists play a critical role in promoting Zimbabwe as a safe destination of choice, Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Barbara Rwodzi has said.

Minister Rwodzi revealed this on Monday in Harare, during an interactive media workshop with journalists from local and international media houses.

She stated that her ministry is “an enemy to none”, hence they were going to work with journalists to tell the Zimbabwean story, which will make tourists want to visit “our national heritage.”

Minister Rwodzi also said the country was a heritage which all Zimbabweans were given by God so we should cherish it and promote it.

“As a Ministry of the Tourism and Hospitality Industry, we recognize the critical role that media plays in shaping perceptions, disseminating information, driving positive change and highlighting our natural wonders, cultural heritage, as this is instrumental in attracting visitors and investors alike.

“Your role extends beyond reporting; it is about shaping narratives, influencing perceptions, and inspiring confidence in Zimbabwe as a safe, welcoming, and vibrant destination.

“As a Ministry, we are grateful to each member of the media for your tireless efforts in showcasing Zimbabwe’s diverse tourism offerings to the world.

“Your presence here underscores the importance of our dialogue in fostering understanding, transparency, and collaboration,” she said.

Similar sentiments were also echoed by her Deputy, Tongai Mafidi Mnangagwa, who said such media engagements were critical in creating partnerships which help to drive country’s tourism.

He reiterated that for the country to be marketed as a destination of choice, the media had a critical role to ensure that is achieved by telling the good Zimbabwean story.

“Our ministry is the only ministry which was given the mandate by his Excellency (President Mnangagwa) to sell the country, selling it in a good way. And any company which does sales, has sales representatives or agents whom you send out with the product, and the agents are sitting in front of us.

“It’s you (journalists) who should market the country. But sometimes there is always an issue of sensational reporting, because apparently it pays to write negative things, but be at forefront to market your country.

“Be at the forefront to tell the true story about Zimbabwe. There is so much development in the country; we are under sanctions but look at what we are doing, we are progressing. Those are some of the stories that you need to talk about.

“If I were a King, I was going to Knight all of you, who will go and tell the true Zimbabwean story,” said Minister Mnangagwa.

He also emphasized that journalists should protect their country, as he also echoed President Mnangagwa’s mantra, “nyika inovakwa nevene vayo.”

“That is your role, you build the image of the country, you have thousands and millions of followers in your groups, tell the Zimbabwean story, so that we build our country and we move forward.

“It is a benefit for everyone, and as visitors come, the country will also benefit,” added Minister Mnangagwa.

Harare, Zimbabwe – The people of Zimbabwe and the broader community reflect on the immense contributions of a distinguished servant, Cde. Dr. Karikoga Kaseke, affectionately known as KK. From his humble beginnings to his notable roles within Zimbabwe’s military, transportation, aviation, and tourism sectors, KK has left an indelible mark on the nation and its people.

Born on June 16, 1962, at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, Harare, KK embarked on an educational journey that showcased his brilliance from an early age. Despite pausing his studies to join the Liberation War in 1978, KK returned to excel academically and professionally, achieving degrees in Administration, Business, Strategy, and Tourism. His peers often compared his generosity and kindness to that of a local “Mother Theresa,” highlighting his unmatched support and benevolence within his community.

KK’s youthful contribution to the Liberation struggle underlined his dedication and willingness to put country before self. His post-independence military service saw him rise within the Zimbabwe National Army, emphasizing his leadership in intelligence and counter-intelligence sectors.

Transitioning to the transport and aviation sector, KK’s leadership prowess flourished as he assumed roles from Chief Security Officer at the Department of Civil Aviation to CEO of the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ), bringing significant advancements to the nation’s airport infrastructure.

However, it was as the Chief Executive of the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) from 2003-2018 that KK truly transformed the tourism landscape of Zimbabwe. Under his leadership, Zimbabwe achieved several milestones, including hosting the prestigious 20th session of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) General Assembly in 2013, revitalizing the Zimbabwe International Carnival, implementing the Zimbabwe Tourism Development Strategy, establishing the “Visit Zimbabwe” campaign, and significantly increasing tourist arrivals through strategic infrastructure and facility investments.

KK’s unwavering loyalty to country’s ZANU PF epitomized his commitment to his country and its people. His life’s work, characterized by forthrightness, bravery, and generosity, leaves a legacy that will inspire future generations.

As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate a life well-lived, dedicated to the betterment of Zimbabwe and its people. Dr. Kaseke’s contributions to national development, community service, and political loyalty will forever be cherished and remembered.

Mourners are gathered at 38 Boscobel Drive in Highlands. Details of the burial arrangements will be communicated in due course.

Sanganai/Hlanganani buyers begin pre-tours

More than 40 buyers who arrived in the country for the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo have begun their pre-tours of top resort towns in preparation for the 16th edition of the tourism event which will take place from October 12-14 at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre in Bulawayo.
The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) says over 100 buyers from various countries around the world will be attending this year’s expo.
And as is customary, the buyers are taken on tours of the country’s resorts to explore potential business opportunities.
“The tours have already commenced in Nyanga, Vumba, Mutare, and Kariba. We have seen 312 exhibitors from regional and international markets registering to participate in this premier business exchange platform,” said Godfrey Koti, Head of Corporate Affairs at ZTA.
Koti added that they are expecting buyers from Zimbabwe’s traditional source markets, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, China and Dubai.
He expressed excitement about the positive response from the international community, especially from the critical source markets they work with.
Koti further revealed that there are several highlights to look forward to, including the Aviation Development Forum, Buyers and Media Cocktail, Welcome Party and Food Expo on the 12th. The following day there will be Speed Networking Session and Tourism Investment Forum, while the last day will have Career Guidance Seminar and Family Fun Day (Public Day).
The tourism extravaganza is an annual event held in Zimbabwe, showcasing the country’s vast tourism potential.
It attracts a wide range of local and international exhibitors, industry professionals, and visitors interested in exploring Zimbabwe’s unique attractions and investment opportunities. Its aim is to elevate Zimbabwe’s status as a world-class marketing platform and generate significant revenue for the tourism sector.

Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo to position Zim as an exceptional destination

The Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo which will be happening in Bulawayo from 12-14 October is set to position the country as an exceptional destination for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) and leisure, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) spokesperson Godfrey Koti has revealed.

Koti revealed this on Tuesday at the Robert Mugabe International Airport as they welcomed some buyers who have started arriving for the highly anticipated tourism expo.

“We’re excited to receive the first batch of our international buyers today here at the RGM International Airport.

“We’re looking forward to taking them on the pre and post expo tours. “Through this expo, we strive to showcase the diverse possibilities and opportunities that Zimbabwe offers to individuals and businesses alike,” revealed Koti.

He further added Koti that preparations for this year’s edition were well on course with the exhibitors’ registration deadline fast approaching.

“With over 300 exhibitors already registered, the ZTA has confirmed the participation of approximately 31 regional tourism companies from six countries, including Zambia, South Africa, Botswana, Malawi, Burundi, and Rwanda.

“The ZTA calls upon tourism stakeholders and service providers to leverage this unique platform.

“By participating in Sanganai/Hlanganani, businesses can establish connections with international buyers, forge strategic partnerships, and enhance the visibility of their offerings in the global market.

“Interested stakeholders and service providers are encouraged to promptly register to secure their participation in this exclusive event, as the deadline is rapidly approaching,” added Koti.

Some of the highlights for this expo include the Buyers and Media Cocktail which will be held on the 12th, followed by the Investment Forum on the next day and then the Public Day Family Fun Day on the last day.

The expo which is the country’s annual tourism event is meant to showcase the vast tourism potential and it attracts a wide range of local and international exhibitors, industry professionals, and visitors interested in exploring the unique attractions and investment opportunities.
